Angella M. Nazarian was eleven years old when she and her Jewish Iranian family fled—during the revolution of 1979. In her beautifully illustrated memoir, Life as a Visitor (Assouline), she tells the story of her family's life in Iran, of their resettlement into a predominantly Jewish community in Beverly Hills, and of coming to terms with her own divided identity in part through travel. Angella Nazarian's photographs, from journeys in over two dozen countries, accentuate this compelling story.
Start: 7:30 pm
Co-presented with the TOWN HALL CENTER FOR CIVIC LIFE. A certain time of year is at hand—holiday shopping season. Here to put a damper on the notion as it's currently played out is Wharton School business professor and author (The Tyranny of the Market) Joel Waldfogel with his new book, Scroogenomics: Why You Shouldn't Buy Presents for the Holidays (Princeton). "Waldfogel delivers a badly needed poke in the eye at holiday-time consumer madness, positing that not only is compulsory gift giving stressful and expensive, but it's economically unsound ... This lively, spot-on book may be the one gift that still makes sense to buy come Black Friday." - Publishers Weekly. This is true: books are exempt from this cautionary tale, in our opinion. $5 tickets are available at the door starting at 6:30 p.m., via www.brownpapertickets.com (or 1-800-838-3006). Preferred seating for Town Hall members. Town Hall Seattle is at 1119 Eighth Avenue (at Seneca). For more information, please call Elliott Bay at (206) 624-6600, Town Hall at (206) 652-4255, or see www.townhallseattle.org.
