For over twenty years Seattle photographer Ben Marra and his working partner/wife Linda Marra, a producer/documentarian, have been traveling around the U.S., attending and taking portraits at tribal powwows. An earlier book, Powwow: Images Along the Red Road, was a great success. It is now followed by the striking new book, Faces from the Land: Twenty Years of Powwow Tradition (Abrams). In beautiful photographs, and oral texts of the dancers depicted, this one book tells many stories. "This book is a good reason to celebrate the changing times. Not only do the Marras visit our communities and sensitively present the contemporary Indian people in their finest traditional clothing, they also record the dancers' identities and comments, and even compensate them. So, we wish them long lives for their work as they help us enjoy this new day." - George P. Horse Capture, A'aninin (Gros Ventre), from the Introduction.
