Start: 11:00 am
As part of getting settled in our new home and wanting to reach readers of all ages, we are pleased to re-launch our children's storytime hours. This morning – and other sessions to come – will feature readings from new picture books, and old favorites, as well, with Elliott Bay bookfolk doing the reading and presenting.
Start: 2:00 pm
After her seven-year-old daughter was swept out to sea by a rogue wave, Carol Kearns struggled with grief and bitterness. Helped by the late Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, who encouraged her to become and psychologist and write, Carol Kearns became a pioneer of a new grief therapy, a counselor for parents and families who have lost children to death, and an advocate through groups such as the National Organization of Parents of Murdered Children, and Compassionate Friends. Sugar Cookies and a Nightmare (Melgar Press) is both her own story (including recent post-traumatic stress dealt with when her flight surgeon son was deployed to Iraq), and that of many of her patients.
Start: 7:00 pm
Sixty mornings of sixty-minute walks in Manhattan, documented in 60-sentence essays. 30 days of 45-minute public conversations, transcribed, also in New York. The fusion of these projects is presented in Jon Cotner and Andy Fitch's Ten Walks/Two Talks (Ugly Duckling Presse/Dossier), mapping 21st-century New York in a style inspired by the writing of Basho, and performed here tonight. "Like the propositions of Brainard, Schuyler, or Wittgenstein, Andy Fitch's declarations of ambulatory factof 'mere' observationare barbed with genius: clever, defamiliarizing, cushioned by a hum of meditative stillness ... and when he starts talking with the profound Jon Cotner, a latter-day Plato, we remember that philosophical inquiries have every right to take root in daily curiosities." – Wayne Koestenbaum. Jon Cotner and Andy Fitch were most recently among the artists invited to participate in Tino Sehgal's conversational and choreographic installation at the Guggenheim.
