SUMMARY:ALICE G. DEWEY with S. ANN DUNHAM's \\"Surviving Against the Odds\\"
DESCRIPTION:
This past winter saw the posthumous publication of S. Ann Dunham's anthropological study\, Surviving Against the Odds\: Village Industry in Indonesia (Duke University Press). Ms. Dunham was\, of course\, the mother of President Barack Obama and his sister\, Maya Soetoro-Ng. She also spent formative years in the Seattle area\, residing here with her family as a teenager before the family
moved to Hawai'i. It was in 1960&#151\;fifty years ago&#151\;that she graduated from Mercer Island High School. To help commemorate her presence there\, a scholarship in her name is being established by others from that class (see information below). Alice G. Dewey\, professor emeritus of anthropology at the University of Hawai'i (and whose field is also Indonesia)\, helped oversee the publication of Ann Dunham's book. She is here to help participate in the Mercer Island festivities&#151\;and to talk about the life and scholarly work of Ann Dunham. \\"S. Ann Dunham's Surviving Against the Odds bears witness to her knowledge of and affection for the Southeast Asian nation of Indonesia. The book also speaks legions about Dunham's integrity as a cultural anthropologist ... By the mid-1980s Dunham had begun to see the audience for her work made up of not just academics but Indonesians\, aid workers\, and foreign analysts whose findings affect the lives of ordinary Indonesians. Rather than go with the academic flow\, Dunham stayed true to a research program requiring varied and rigorous methodologies\, all in an effort to speak truth of power and policy making.\\" - Robert W. Hefner. For more information on the Stanley Ann Dunham Scholarship Fund\, please see <a href=\\"http\://www.stanleydunhamfund.org\\" target=\\"_blank\\">www.stanleydunhamfund.org. Tax-deductible contributions are welcome.

SUMMARY:RICHARD WIRICK
DESCRIPTION:
Richard Wirick's new collection of interconnected short stories\, Kicking In (Soft Skull)\, takes the drug war out of the context of the 'fringe element\,' and shines a light on another variety of user\: the Valium-fogged attorney\, the morphine-addled Gulf War orderly\, and others for whom depressants and stimulants are necessary for functioning\, if in a marginalized way. \\"Wirick's stories are powerful\, evocative tales rife with dark beauty. His characters\, whether at work or at war\, or just making it on the jagged margins of society\, jump off the page and into your head&#151\;this is high-octane stuff.\\"- Thomas Kelly.

SUMMARY:LEV GROSSMAN
DESCRIPTION:
First published to high praise and widespread attention a year ago\, Lev Grossman's totally captivating novel\, The Magicians (newly in paper\, Plume)\, a coming-of-age story like almost no other yet with roots in some older\, familiar ground. There is a land called Fillory\, there is a high-school senior named Quentin\, and there are adventures that unfold. \\"The Magicians is to Harry Potter as a shot of Irish whiskey is to a glass of weak tea. Solidly rooted in the traditions of both fantasy and mainstream literary fiction\, the novel tips its hat to Oz and Narnia as well as Harry\, but don't mistake this for a children's book. Grossman's sensibilities are thoroughly adult\, his narrative dark and dangerous and full of twists.\\" - George R.R. Martin. \\"Stirring\, complex\, adventurous ... from the life of Quentin Coldwater\, his slacker Park Slope Harry Potter\, Lev Grossman delivers a superb coming-of-age fantasy.\\" - Junot Díaz. Lev Grossman is also the author of Codex\, and a senior writer and book editor at Time.

SUMMARY:SLOANE CROSLEY at the Sorrento Hotel
DESCRIPTION:
For what should be a lovely\, amusing\, and most sociable time\, we repair up to the Penthouse at the Sorrento Hotel&#151\;which has of late become the site of numerous book-related activities\, from having books available for room service to the Night School dinner discussions with authors to Christopher Frizzelle/The Stranger's hosted\, 'silent' reading together evenings. We're delighted to be presenting Sloane Crosley\, one of the most attuned essayists of her generation. Her debut\, I Was Told There'd Be Cake was a finalist for the Thurber Prize for American Humor\, and was both a critical\, and word-of-mouth favorite. Tonight\, it's her newest collection\, How Did You Get This Number? (Riverhead). \\"A worthy successor to Crosley's well-received debut. Where her first collection focused on a young professional's life in Manhattan\, this follow-up finds the author&#151\;whose day job as a book publicist is rarely mentioned&#151\;taking her show on the road. She gets lost in Lisbon (actually\, she gets lost pretty much everywhere)\, threatened by a bear in Alaska\, and all but deported from France&#151\;or at least discouraged from ever again visiting Notre Dame. Most of the book is funny\, some of it even laugh-out-loud\, but her literary gifts go well beyond easy laughs ... Perhaps the finest essay is the final one ... Initially about wanting what you can't afford\, it transforms into an exploration of receiving what you want that you can't afford ... Ultimately\, though\, it becomes a meditation on a romance that forces Crosley to come to terms with a truth she'd suspect and the lie she was living. It's the least humorous of the collection\, but the most unflinchingly true.\\" - Kirkus Reviews. Free admission. Refreshments will be available for purchase. The Sorrento Hotel is at 900 Madison Street.

SUMMARY:BENJAMIN BALINT
DESCRIPTION:
Commentary was founded in 1945 by Jewish American writers\, children of immigrants steeped in radical socialist politics and labor activism. A forceful advocate of civil rights\, a forum for fiction writers Bernard Malamud and Philip Roth and a home for literary critics\, the magazine's writers' response to the 60s counterculture is now known as neoconservatism&#151\;a school of thought that influenced the political right from the Cold War through the current war on terror\, laying the foundation for today's wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Journalist and scholar Benjamin Balint traces all these shifts and the extraordinary influence of the magazine in Running Commentary\: The Contentious Magazine that Transformed the Jewish Left into the Neoconservative Right (Public Affairs). \\"Benjamin Balint's history of Commentary magazine is nothing less than a history of the intellectual life of Jews in America as they go from being cultural outsiders to consummate insiders ... [His] judicious\, non-partisan account doesn't miss a shift in the political landscape\, whether on the Left or the Right ... This is intellectual history as it should be written\: lucid\, capacious\, and unfailingly readable.\\" - Daphne Merkin. A former Seattle resident and University of Washington graduate\, Benjamin Balint is presently a Herman Kahn Fellow at the Hudson Institute and an editorial writer for the Jerusalem Post.

SUMMARY:RAE ARMANTROUT
DESCRIPTION:
One of this country's most distinguished poets\, and the recipient of this year's Pulitzer Prize for poetry\, Rae Armantrout makes this welcome Elliott Bay reading visit here this evening. The National Book Critics Circle Award winner in 2009\, a National Book Award Finalist in 2009\, a professor of writing and literature at the University of California\, San Diego\, and the author of ten books of poetry\, it is for her most recent collection\, Versed (Wesleyan University Press) that she received this year's Pulitzer. \\"Rae Armantrout is the most philosophical sort of poet\, continually seeking in her collections to summon and surmise the contemporary character of subjective experience and\, further\, to test the limits of knowledge ... Armantrout's writing in Versed will thus be familiar to her longtime readers for its way of holding meaning (and identification) in uneasy suspension. Short lines in brief poems are polyvalent in both voicing and implication\, inviting multiple readings ... yet pleasure arises in contemplating both the options and the paradox.\\" - Tom Griffin\, Bookforum.

SUMMARY:MISHNA WOLFF
DESCRIPTION:
One of the most beguiling\, surprising memoirs to come along in some time was that of Mishna Wolff with her coming-of-age account\, I'm Down (newly in paper\, Griffin). First published last year\, this is a Seattle coming-of-age&#151\;Mishna Wolff writes of her upbringing in the Rainier Valley\, living most of the time with her father and sister. Though white\, her father identified culturally as black. This leads to quite a story. It's told with humor\, empathy\, and insight\, even as it lets readers feel much of the fear and uncertainty the author felt as an adolescent. The story has its shifts&#151\;from feeling she didn't fit in as 'black' (acceptance from peers was mixed)\, she goes for a time to live with her mother\, attending a new school with wealthy white kids who\, far from being enviable\, seem lonely and removed from real life. \\"In a memoir that is frequently hilarious\, occasionally terrifying\, and ultimately bittersweet\, Wolff forces readers to consider whether racial identity is the result of nature\, derived through nurture\, or constructed and reconstructed through life ... Wolff writes fluidly and offers moments of great insight through the story rather than explanation\, making it easy for readers to engage with the child's questions and growing frustrations. An excellent choice for discussion in ethnic identity curricula\, but absorbing reading\, too.\\" - Francisca Goldsmith\, Library Journal. As part of this Seattle visit\, Mishna Wolff will also be reading at the Northwest African American Museum on Saturday\, June 26. Please see <a href=\\"http\://www.naamnw.org\\" target=\\"_blank\\">www.naamnw.org for more information.

SUMMARY:SHANE JONES
DESCRIPTION:
This is a season&#151\;and month&#151\;for excellent fiction debuts\, among them Shane Jones with his vivid\, allusive\, fabular tale\, Light Boxes (Penguin). It is fabulous\, this story of a town that's been cast into an endless (truly endless) February. Something is awry\, something needs to be made right. Flight is an issue. \\"At last\, a book that cries out to our inner balloonists. Shane Jones has built a fable that is fresh and surprising\, but also familiar in the way that the oldest stories are familiar.\\" - Jedediah Berry. \\"Reading this book makes you realize what our American literature has been missing. Wholly original\, tremendously imaginative\, written with the deftest hand\, Light Boxes makes sense of modern life in the way only dreams can.\\" - Joe Meno.

SUMMARY:BRET EASTON ELLIS
DESCRIPTION:
A long and lively month of June ends on a high note with this Elliott Bay return by novelist Bret Easton Ellis. Author of such novels as American Psycho\, Glamorama\, The Informers\, Lunar Park\, and The Rules of Attracttion\, his newest\, Imperial Bedrooms (Knopf)\, comes as a sequel\, twenty-five years later\, to his celebrated debut\, Less Than Zero. \\"Ellis explores what disillusioned youth looks like 25 years later in this brutal sequel ... The story takes on a creepy\, nourish bent&#151\;with [protagonist] Clay as the frightened detective who doesn't really want to know anything&#151\;as it barrels toward a conclusion that reveals the horror that lies at the center of a tortured soul. Ellis fans will delight in the characters and Ellis's easy hand in manipulating their fates\, and though the novel's synchronicity with Zero is sublime\, this also works as a stellar stand-alone.\\" - Publishers Weekly.
