SUMMARY:MARK KURLANSKY
DESCRIPTION:
When we hear that writer Mark Kurlansky is coming our way with a new book\, we're never sure which of his many enthusiasms he'll bring with him&#151\;but we're there because who can resist? This time he's writing fiction in which Oragnina plays a role ... as does Red Sea Salt\, Osetra caviar\, tofu\, and baseball\, all part of Edible Stories\: A Novel in Sixteen Parts (Riverhead). Here he treats food as a point of entry into human relationships\, memory\, identity\, and aesthetic experience. \\"A delicious and delectable novel by an award-winning food writer that leaves you wanting more.\\" - Kirkus Reviews. Mark Kurlansky's many other books include Salt\: A World History\, Cod\, Nonviolence\: The History of a Dangerous Idea\, The Food of a Younger Land\, and the more recent\, The Eastern Stars\: How Baseball Changed the Dominican Town of San Pedfro de Macor&iacute\;s.

SUMMARY:PATRICK F. McMANUS
DESCRIPTION:
The first of two here this evening from over the Cascades brings us Spokane-based Patrick McManus. From his earlier humorous collections of essays&#151\;The Night the Bear Ate Goombaw\, The Grasshopper Trap\, Real Ponies Don't Go Oink\, and more&#151\;he's now been writing a popular mystery series featuring Sheriff Bo Tully of Blight County\, ID. The Huckleberry Murders (Simon &amp\; Schuster) is the fourth of these\, a novel in which Bo Tully has a murder suspect\, but no body or other evidence to prove a murder has been committed. Then he finds bodies\, but for these has no likely suspect. \\"In his fourth outing (after The Double-Jack Murders)\, Sheriff Bo Tully is hip deep in bodies when he finds three young men shot to death execution-style as he is out picking huckleberries for his mother ... McManus' folksy narrative keeps the reader's interest with plenty of humor\, aw-shucks moments\, and action ... Bo Tully is a treat for readers who like some western flair and an old-fashioned approach to justice in their mysteries.\\" - Library Journal.

SUMMARY:MICHAEL FISCHMAN
DESCRIPTION:
In Stumbling Into Infinity\: An Ordinary Man in the Sphere of Enlightenment (Morgan James Publishing)\, Michael Fischman retraces a life story that begins not unusually with growing up in a family making its way into this country\, having certain hopes\, wonders\, and aspirations\, experimenting as can happen at emerging stages\, then almost stumbling into a life-altering transition which has shaped his whole being to this day. That now means his role as a founding member and current president of the U.S. Art of Living Foundation\, but even more\, it means a path that led to meeting\, then working with\, one of India's most renowned\, acknowledged spiritual teachers\, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. \\"Michael Fischman's journey reveals how fears and negative emotions can be transformed into love\, compassion\, and higher consciousness when a student has an authentic relationship with a wise teacher.\\" - Deepak Chopra. \\"Stumbling Into Infinity has deep knowledge\, humor\, and moments of grace. Ultimately\, this book will inspire you to see how much better your life&#151\;and the world&#151\;can be through meditation\, service to others\, and a deep sense of gratitude.\\" - Carol Kline.

SUMMARY:CEDAR SIGO
DESCRIPTION:
Stranger in Town (City Lights Books) is the much-anticipated second poetry collection of San Francisco-based poet Cedar Sigo&#151\;who is originally from up here. Cedar Sigo was born on the Suquamish Reservation. En route to San Francisco and other work there\, he studied with Allen Gisnberg\, Anne Waldman\, and others at Naropa Institute. He also writes on art\, film\, and literature\, has collaborated with visual artists\, recently blogged for SF MOMA's Open Space. In the words of one\, his work \\"reflects queer identity while eschewing clich&eacute\;d aesthetics ... exuding a mysticism redolent of the SF Renaissance.\\" \\"A reality made of poetry is all one could ask for\, and here it is&#151\;created of skillful\, elegant\, lyric moments and lines. A door opens to a light\, fluent room\, where narratives of 'urban mysticism' are pursued. An ear moves from 'professional music' to the sound of melting snow. Poems that breathe with a forthright intimacy.\\" - Joanne Kyger.

SUMMARY:MICAH ZENKO
DESCRIPTION:
Co-presented with the TOWN HALL CENTER FOR CIVIC LIFE and the COUNCIL ON FOREIGN RELATIONS. Council on Foreign Relations Fellow (for Conflict Resolution) Micah Zenko\, author of Between Threats and War\: U.S. Discrete Military Operations in the Post-Cold War World (Stanford University Press)\, examines 36 \\"limited\\" (or \\"Discrete Military Operations\\") carried out by the U.S. government over the past 20 years\, exploring their usefulness and efficacy. \\"Zenko's analysis of the limited use of force is brilliant and timely. He breaks new ground in moving beyond Cold War thinking to assess the efficacy of specific military measures in a unipolar environment. This work is a major step in sharpening the application of U.S. military force to achieve political aims abroad. A 'must-read' for anyone&#151\;military or civilian&#151\;who wants to participate in or understand U.S. national security decision-making.\\" - General (ret.) SUMMARY:CHASE JARVIS
DESCRIPTION:
An internationally regarded photographer (probably more known outside of Seattle than in) who works in both the fine and commercial arts\, Chase Jarvis is out in the larger world more than most. He brings something of that perspective&#151\;seeing the surface\, looking beyond&#151\;to show how his home city Seattle works\, in the sometimes subtle\, often surprising\, layered and threaded ways communities where culture\, commerce\, and collaboration are all fostered do function. In his newly-published book of photographs and short texts\, Seattle 100\: Portrait of a City (New Riders/Peachpit)\, he presents photo and word portraits of some of the people and ensembles who do this work. With its pictures and text&#151\;including little listings of places noted by the people depicted&#151\;this book is as much a starting point for conversation and exploration as it is an arrived-at object\, albeit a beautifully produced one.

SUMMARY:KEN ARMSTRONG & JONATHAN MARTIN at Seattle Public Central Library
DESCRIPTION:
Presented by The Seattle Times. The Seattle Times' coverage of Maurice Clemmons' ambush slaying of four Lakewood police officers garnered a 2010 Pulitzer Prize. In a new book built from that coverage and developed further\, The Other Side of Mercy\: A Killer's Journey Across the American Divide (Seattle Times)\, Times reporters Ken Armstrong and Jonathan Martin tell a story about this country's racial divide\, the political risks of mercy\, and missed opportunities. \\"Ken Armstrong and Jonathan Martin went far beyond the headlines in The Other Side of Mercy ... What emerges from their research is not just a snapshot of a remorseless killer\, but a portrait of a man careening towards destruction and how he was helped along the way by a cast of unwitting accomplices ... Solidly researched and brilliantly written\, the book is a real heartbreaker.\\" - Robert Ferrigno. Free admission is on a first-come\, first-serve basis. SUMMARY:ELSIE HULSIZER - Rescheduled to January 10
DESCRIPTION:
Seattle marine writer Elsie Hulsizer\, whose earlier book Voyages to Windward explored Vancouver's west coast\, now offers sailors (armchair and otherwise) a close-up of Alaska's southeast in her new book\, Glaciers\, Bears and Totems\: Sailing in Search of the Real Southeast Alaska (Harbour Press). This account has Else Hulsizer and her husband Steve on a series of annual voyages\, probing fjords\, villages\, glaciers\, and more. Lots of animal life is here\, too. Helpful is its sorting out what cruise-ship tourists see from what those who live and frequent the terrain see and know. It's expected this will be a powerpoint presentation&#151\;an informative and entertaining evening on a beautiful part of the planet to our north.

SUMMARY:NANCY MEDWELL
DESCRIPTION:
Seattle photographer Nancy Medwell concludes this eventful November with an illustrated talk for her striking book of portraits\, Eternal Moments (Nancy Medwell Photography). Most of the photographs here are those of intimacy and connection between loved ones&#151\;at different stages of life\, moments where there is both the present and a sense of something larger and longer in time. \\"The photographs of Nancy Medwell have a poignant\, piercing\, human directness and bring tenderly home to us the great central truths of human life&#151\;love\, loss\, passion\, humor\, and the never-ending need for deeper soul connection. They are also unobtrusively and unpretentiously sacred\, and reveal that ordinary life\, when viewed from love\, is a fountain of miracle.\\" - Andrew Harvey.
