Start: 6:30 pm
As the literature of ideas and imagination, Science Fiction and Fantasy simply demands discussion. Our selection for January is Haruki Murakami's Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. Japan's most widely-read and controversial writer, author of A Wild Sheep Chase, hurtles into the consciousness of the West with this narrative about a split-brained data processor, a deranged scientist, his shockingly undemure granddaughter, and various thugs, librarians, and subterranean monsters—not to mention Bob Dylan and Lauren Bacall.
Start: 7:30 pm
Co-presented with TOWN HALL SEATTLE's Arts & Culture Series. Though he has written numerous well-received novels—The End of the Jews and Angry Black White Boy among them—Adam Mansbach has become most known for his bestselling send-up of a child's story, albeit one for parents of young children—Go the F*ck to Sleep. He makes this Seattle return tonight for a highly-touted new novel that has New York City and an era now past—though not distantly so—at its considerable heart. Rage is Back (Viking) has political revolutionaries, tagging graffiti artists, and more. "A gutsy act of cultural nostalgia, full of nostalgia for a vanished New York, a chaotic, colorful city full of graffiti and guerilla art. Adam Mansbach is a fearless, funny, and thoroughly engaging writer." - Tom Perrotta. Helping make this what should be a 'fearless, funny, and thoroughly engaging' evening will be the participation of John Roderick, renowned Seattle-based musician (The Long Winters) and writer. $5 tickets are available at the door starting at 6:30 p.m., or in advance via www.strangertickets.com. Town Hall Seattle is at 1119 Eighth Avenue (at Seneca). Preferred seating for Town Hall members.
