Matthew Zapruder

Though he lives and teaches (Saint Mary’s College) in the Bay Area, Matthew Zapruder has strong connections to this region and poetry. He is, among his many roles, an editor at large at Seattle’s esteemed Wave Books poetry press, and his last three collections of poetry - The Pajamist, Come On All You Ghosts, and Sun Bear have come from venerable Copper Canyon Press. He is here this evening for his first prose book, one which poses the big question, Why Poetry (Ecco), as an avowal, an impassioned, moving case for poetry’s centrality in life, and its utter necessity.

“Zapruder’s poems have a directness and verve that are reminiscent of Frank O’Hara; they’re poems for everyone, everywhere, insisting that everything is subject for poetry, and that all language is poetic language, democratic in its insights and feelings.” — NPR on his poetry.
