SETH M. HOLMES

02/25/2014 7:30 pm

Anthropologist and physician Seth M. Holmes conducted five years of research with migrant workers traveling from Oaxaca up the West Coast of the U.S (including spending time in an Arizona jail) to uncover the ways in which market forces, anti-immigrant sentiment, and racism undermine the workers’ health and health care. His book Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies: Migrant Farmworkers in the United States (University of California Press) sheds light on vital but rarely examined issues. “Dr. Holmes exposes the links among suffering, the inequalities related to the structural violence of global trade which compel migration, and the symbolic violence of stereotypes and prejudices that normalize racism."—Marilyn Gates, New York Journal of Books.
