THE SIREN CALL OF AMBITION with DANIELLE DUTTON, TARA ATKINSON, & JANE WONG
Co-presented with the WOMEN’S NATIONAL BOOK ASSOCIATION - SEATTLE CHAPTER. In celebration of Danielle Dutton's newly released second novel, Margaret the First (Catapult), Seattle writers Tara Atkinson and Jane Wong join Danielle Dutton here tonight. Margaret the First imagines the life of Margaret Cavendish, the shy, gifted, and wildly unconventional 17th-century British Duchess who wrote and published volumes of poetry, philosophy, feminist plays, and utopian science fiction at a time when being a writer was not an option open to women. "Margaret the First is set in the seventeenth century, but don’t let that fool you. It’s a strikingly smart and daringly feminist novel with modern insights into love, marriage, and the siren call of ambition.” -Jenny Offill. Also worth noting is that Danielle Dutton is founder of the excellent independent literary press, Dorothy, dedicated primarily to publishing fiction by women. One of the founders of Seattle’s APRIL Festival, Tara Atkinson is the author of the chapbook, Bedtime Stories (Alice Blue). Selected for Best American Poetry 2015, Jane Wong has a first collection forthcoming in 2016, OVERPOUR (Action Books).
