ROBERT ATKINS Tuesday, April 18 at 6 p.m.
Robert Atkins, an award-winning art historian, activist, and author of the books ArtSpeak and ArtSpoke, is here with a new anthology he and the National Coalition Against Censorship's Svetlana Mintcheva have edited. Censoring Culture: Contemporary Threats to Free Expression (New Press) is a bracing collection of pieces about the various faces and forms of censorship that exist in the art world and in this country, at large, today. These are forms overtand less so, including self-censorship and economic censorship. Among the contributors to this eye-opener are J.M. Coetzee, Randall Kennedy, Hans Haacke, Judy Blume, Diane Ravitch, Lawrence Lessig, and others.
