GARY D. COLE Friday, April 7 at 7:30 p.m.
Former Portland theatre artist Gary Cole has lived a uniquely conflicted life, as chronicled in Artless: The Odyssey of a Republican Cultural Creative (Ooligan), his memoir of working in theatre, the CIA, and being politically active as a Republican. As an artist, he has not worked in benign, traditional, 'safe' art forms. Though a campaigner in their day for both Bushes (in 1992 and 2000), the offer he received to serve with the National Endowment for the Arts was retracted quickly and mysteriously shortly after it was offered. This and many other stories make for an interesting story of one man and art and politics in our time.
