Co-presented with COPPER CANYON PRESS and the WASHINGTON CENTER FOR THE BOOK AT THE SEATTLE PUBLIC LIBRARY. Copper Canyon Press has recently done the lovely and extraordinary thing of posthumously publishing June Jordan's body of poetic work in a striking new volume. Directed By Desire: The Collected Poems of June Jordan is evidence of her great voice, one missed and needed in these perilous times. Her poems of love and fierceness, tenderness and activism were heard near and far, including Seattle, where she made a number of memorable reading appearances (including Elliott Bay) before her death in 2002 after a valiant fight with cancer. This special program will feature a number of Seattle poets and writersAnna Balint, Lauri Conner, Paul Harding, Alan Lau, Nancy Rawles, and Carletta Carrington Wilsonreading selections of June Jordan's poems, with Directed By Desire's co-editor Sara Miles offering context and commentary. "Jordan makes us think of Akhmatova, of Neruda. She is among the bravest of us, the most outraged. She feels for all. She is the universal poet." - Alice Walker. This should be something. This program is free, with no advance tickets. For more information, please see www.coppercanyonpress.org or www.spl.org. The Seattle Public Central Library is located at 1000 4th Avenue in Downtown Seattle.
