PAUL WRIGHT & SILJA J.A. TALVI Wednesday, April 2 at 7:30 p.m.
The industry created to now incarcerate 2.3 million people in federal, state, and local prisons is fed by over $185 billion in tax dollarsmuch of it now diverted to private companies, banks, and even churches. Paul Wright, founder and editor of Prison Legal News, speaks about the costs (and who ultimately benefits) of the prison industry, and more, as outlined in Prison Profiteers: Who Makes Money from Mass Incarceration (The New Press). He edited this strong collection with Tara Herivel. Also here with him tonight is Silja J.A. Talvi, the Seattle-based investigative journalist whose recent book, Women Behind Bars: The Crisis of Women in the U.S. Prison System (Seal), has won widespread attention.
