CHUCK KLOSTERMAN Friday, August 19 at 7:30 p.m.
Are Chuck Klosterman and Sarah Vowell in some kind of cahoots? A few months after the appearance of Ms. Vowell’s Assassination Vacation, which chronicles her visits to locales of presidential assassinations, her is Mr. Klosterman (also the author of Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs and Fargo Rock City) visiting the sites where rock stars such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Nancy Spungen, Buddy Holly, and many more met their demise. This he does in his newest book, Killing Yourself to Live: 85% of a True Story (Scribner). "Klosterman runs rock to ground in this ‘death project’ that opens with him poking about in the notorious Chelsea Hotel, where Sid Vicious associate Nancy Spungen died...A great takeoff for this grim but snappy travelogue and disquisition on death, fame, substance abuse, and rock ‘n’ roll...Klosterman’s keen eye for American pop-cultural themes and undercurrents facilitates thoughtful observation, and his prose brings those themes and undercurrents together in strange, fresh ways." - Mike Tribby, Booklist.
