TIMOTHY EGAN
Wednesday, December 13 at 5:30 p.m. at Microsoft Auditorium, Seattle Public Library, 1000 Fourth Avenue

Co-presented with the WASHINGTON CENTER FOR THE BOOK AT THE SEATTLE PUBLIC LIBRARY. One year ago, Seattle-rooted award-winning New York Times journalist and author Tim Egan began the public life of his newest book, The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl (new in paper, Mariner), as he had with each of his four tremendous books (The Good Rain, Breaking Blue, Lasso the Wind, and The Winemaker's Daughter), with a reading at Elliott Bay. After he received—hooray!—the National Book Award this past November 15, we thought it appropriate to stage something celebratory as we had in 1990 when Charles Johnson had similarly received the National Book Award. As it turned out this time, others had the same idea: this Seattle Central Public Library evening is expected to include special appearances and proclamations by Mayor Greg Nickels, City Councilmember Nick Licata, and others, all helping note and celebrate this book's honors. These honors also have included a Washington State Book Award, glowing reviews everywhere, and readerly enthusiasm. "As one who, as a young reporter, survived and reported on the great Dust Bowl disaster, I recommend this book as a dramatic, exciting, and accurate account of that incredible and deadly phenomenon. This is can't-put-down-history." – Walter Cronkite. "A flat-out masterpiece of historical reportage." – John Marshall, Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Free admission is on a first-come, first-serve basis. The Seattle Public Central Library is located at 1000 Fourth Avenue (between Madison & Spring). Parking in the Central Library garage will be available for a $5 special event rate with voucher available at the reading. For more information, please see www.spl.org.
