SAMUEL GREEN
Wednesday, February 13 at 7:30 p.m.

As many times as Waldron Island-based poet, editor/publisher (with Sally Green, of Brooding Heron Press), teacher, and printer Sam Green has read here, he has never read here quite as he does this evening. Yes, he does have an excellent new book of poems, The Grace of Necessity (Carnegie-Mellon), out, but he is also here as the newly announced Poet Laureate for Washington. "Samuel Green's poems, like his life, fall naturally, smoothly, and uniquely into his days. They are a calendar of events in nature ... Green's language, as clear and direct as any scientific discourse, is charged nevertheless with the intricate force of meaning and personality. These poems cherish us even while we are cherishing them." – Hayden Carruth. "With the steady, alert application of awake attention, Green brings to these compressed accountings of labor, of love, of the wide community of shared existence, the full measure of both the world's exactitude and its splendor." – Jane Hirshfield. In addition to reading from his own work this evening, it's expected that Sam Green will read from other Washington poets on the theme of love ... as this is the eve of Valentine's Day. Come, enjoy ...
