Presented by the TURKISH STUDIES PROGRAM, THE DEPARTMENT OF NEAR EASTERN LANGUAGES AND CIVILIZATION, UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON. This special Friday evening/daylong Saturday symposium will bring together eminent translators, poets, a musician, scholars, and more together to discuss aspects of the present place of Turkish literature in the world today. Orhan Pamuk's recent Nobel Prize has helped highlight what is going on, and this weekend should do a part in exploring even more. Among those participating here are eminent University of Washington professor, author, and translator Walter G. Andrews; Maureen Freely (over from the UK, where she is the primary translator of Pamuk's work now), esteemed poet, over from Ankara, Hilmi Yavuz, and many others. Friday, February 1 at 8 p.m. at Kane Hall 220: scheduled are an address by Ahmet Ari, Secretary for the Ministry of Culture of Turkey; followed by a poetry reading by Hilmu Yavuz (Seasons of the Word, Syracuse) and translator Walter G. Andrews. Saturday, February 2, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Communications 120: a series of panels: 10 a.m., Aron Aji and Selim S. Kuru; 1 p.m., Erdag Göknar and Maureen Freely; 2 p.m., Walter G. Andrews and Hilmi Yavuz; 3 p.m., Roundtable Discussion. Saturday, February 2, 4:30 p.m. at Kane Hall 220: a concert by Münir Nurettin Beken. Admission to all of these programs is free of charge. Support for this program has also come from The Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, The Simpson Center for the Humanities, and The Turkish-American Cultural Association of Washington.
