ELLIOTT BAY BOOK GROUP Monday, July 3 at 6:30 p.m.
Each month, the Elliott Bay Book Club reads and discusses the best in contemporary fiction with the occasional classic thrown in for good measure. In The Tortilla Curtain, T.C. Boyle examines the conflicts and consequences when the lives of two couples collide, one pair L.A. liberals and the other Mexican illegals. Barbara Kingsolver said of Boyle's nove, "Lays on the line our national cult of hypocrisy. Comically and painfully, he details the smug wastefulness of the two haves and the vile misery of the have-nots." and The Portland Oregonian wrote "A tale that squeezes one last cup of vinegar from The Grapes of Wrath." The Tortilla Curtain was the winner of the Prix Medicis Estanger.
