RITA NAKASHIMA BROCK & REBECCA ANN PARKER Tuesday, July 1 at 7 p.m. at Seattle First Baptist Church
Presented as part of the SEATTLE SPIRITUAL SYNTHESIS SERIES with SEATTLE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH. Rita Nakashima Brock and Rebecca Ann Parker, theologians whose previous book, Proverbs of Ashes, offered an influential and provocative challenge to the centrality of atonement within Christian religious traditions, return to Seattle for this talk tonight. Their new book, Saving Paradise: How Christianity Traded Love of This World for Crucifixion and Empire (Beacon), again questions received wisdom about Christian religious tradition, arguing that as society changed, early emphasis on beauty and healing within Christianity (including religious art) were supplanted with visions of crucifixion, torture, and death. "This humane and often beautiful study of faith, loss and hope straddles the boundary between historical discovery and spiritual writing." - Publishers Weekly. Free, no advance tickets. Seattle First Baptist Church is located at 1111 Harvard Avenue (at Union). For more information on this evening, please call Elliott Bay at (206) 624-6600.
