MYRNA CAPP & KRISTIN CAPP with SHEREE SERETSE Sunday, June 8 at 2 p.m.
Seattle ethnomusicologist and Seattle Pacific University professor Myrna Capp is jouned by her daughter, award-winning photographer Kristin Capp, for this collaborative presentation on Zimbabwean music. Their new book, Keeping the Embers Alive: Musicians of Zimbabwe (Africa World Press), is a celebration of thirteen singers, mbirists, guitarists, praise poets, jazz musicians, and others, continuing in the spirit of Shona music today. Seattle musician Sheree Seretse, musician and founder/director of Anzanga Marimba and Dance Ensemble, whose work has for many years helped keep this tradition alive in the Northwest, will perform on the mbira as part of today's program. "Myrna Capp's down-to-earth interviews with thirteen musicians from Zimbabwe form the basis of this thought-provoking and informative collection ... It's a 'must-own' for your personal and institutional library on Africa." - Loran Olsen, emeritus professor of music, Washington State University.
