SINA QUEYRAS & SARAH MANGOLD Saturday, March 10 at 7:30 p.m.
Co-presented with HEDGEBROOK and the CANADIAN STUDIES CENTER, JACKSON SCHOOL OF INTERNATIONAL STUDIES, UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON. We are delighted to welcome back Brooklyn-based Canadian poet Sina Queyras, to be joined here tonight by Seattle poet Sarah Mangold. Sina Queyras is here with her third collection, the extraordinary book of prose poems that is Lemon Hound (Coach House). "Any misgivings generated by a book of prose poetry which claims to be, 'among other things, a direct response to and engagement with the work of Virginia Woolf' are entirely dissipated on first contact...To the contrary, this collection proves Queyras to be a poet of incredible skill and competence, capable of taking such daunting literary giants as Woolf and Gertrude Stein and interacting with their work in a way which is utterly compelling, contemporary, and uniquely her own...The imagery, repetition, and philosophic range of these poems make for an engrossing and satisfying read." - Matthew J. Trafford, The Dominion. Sina Queyras is also editor of Open Field: Thirty Contemporary Canadian Poets. Sarah Mangold is most recently the author of the chapbooks Boxer Rebellion (g o n g) and Picture of the Basket (Dusie). A recipient of an Individual Artist Award from the Seattle Arts Commission and a MacDowell Fellow, she is also the author of Household Mechanics and Blood Substitute, and publishes Bird Dog, a journal of innovative writing and art.
