Elliott Bay's Drama Book Group, Stages, meets once a month to read, enjoy and discuss great plays and dramatic works, contemporary and classic, from the U.S. and around the world. As spring approaches this month, we turn our attention to the book of the hit award-winning musical Spring Awakening. Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik's bold new musical adaptation was inspired by the once-banned and still provocative classic German play about adolescent love and puberty by Frank Wedekind. "...this brave new musical, haunting and electifying by turns, restores the mystery, the thrill to that shattering transformation that stirs in all our souls, some time around the age of thirteen. Spring Awakening has been created with such care and craft that the voyage back is a deeply rewarding one." - New York Times. Fans and readers of Wedekind's original text are welcome to chime in as well! Please join us for a rousing discussion of this current Broadway sensation that will also be touring to Seattle's Paramount Theatre this October.
