Each month, the Elliott Bay Book Club reads and discusses the best in contemporary fiction with the occasional classic thrown in for good measure. Our selection this month is The Kill
by Emile Zola, translated by Arthur Goldhammer. Zola's The Kill is a novel of desire, ambition and greed. It is the story of the ruthless financier Aristide Saccard and the forbidden affair between his son, Maxime, and his second wife, Renee. The Los Angeles Times Book Review calls it "A relentless work, with decadence in every detail." And Jean Strouse said, "Goldhammer's translation of Zola's satiric, transgressive taleabout, among other things, Paris, modernity, incest, and the order of the newis pure delight."
