MICHELINE AHORONIAN MARCOM
Friday, March 14 at 7:30 p.m.

One of the most arresting, committed writers at work today, Micheline Aharonian Marcom makes this very welcome return this evening. The recipient of numerous awards and distinctions—from the Whiting Writers' Award and a Lannan Literary Fellowship to a PEN USA Literary Award and selection as Notable/Best Book by the Times of both New York and Los Angeles—she has read here for each of her amazing novels, Three Apples Fell from Heaven and The Daydreaming Boy. Both delved powerfully into aspects of the Armenian genocide and diaspora of the last century. Tonight, she reads from her just-released third novel, the incantatory prose poem that is Draining the Sea (Riverhead). "With the gorgeous prose that has characterized her previous works, Micheline Marcom gives us a new work of obsession, tragedy, and the unpredictable trajectories of the heart. Cross-cutting between the stories of a half-Armenian man in Los Angeles and a brutalized young woman in Guateamala, Marcom beautifully mines the undercurrents that suffuse their lives." - Cristina Garcia. "Few writers have the courage and honesty to go the places Marcom goes. Draining the Sea is searing and unblinking—the most intense work to date from one of America's most dauntless novelists. The book is a remarkable collision of memory and imagination." - Peter Orner.
