DAVID SHIELDS Monday, March 10 at 7:30 p.m.
University of Washington English professor David Shields has received numerous national awards, and been a finalist for several more for a body of work that has included fiction and a wide range of nonfiction. He is receiving attention such as he never before has for his newest book, The Thing About Life is That One Day You'll Be Dead (Knopf). "It's a bold writer who dares to tackle head-on the subject of what it means to be humansomething that David Shields does with an extraordinary mixture of tenderness, humor, and inexhaustible curiosity." - Jonathan Raban. "David Shields has accomplished something here so pure and wide in its implications that I think of it almost as a secular, unsentimental Kahlil Gibran: a textbook for the acceptance of our fate on earth." - Jonathan Lethem.
