ANN FESSLER
Tuesday, May 23 at 7:30 p.m.

Photographer and writer Ann Fessler interviewed over one hundred women who, during the days before legalized birth control and abortion, gave up children for adoption. Her book, The Girls Who Went Away: The Hidden History of Women Who Surrendered Children for Adoption in the Decades Before Roe v. Wade (Penguin), also tells Ann Fessler's own story of reuniting with her birth mother. "Between 1945 and 1973, when unwed motherhood was considered shameful and abortion was generally illegal, 1.5 million babies were relinquished for adoption. Fessler...offers an incredible and deeply moving look at the personal cost suffered by the women who gave up their babies, voluntarily and involuntarily." - Booklist.
