BRUCE FULTON & DAVID R. McCANN with translations of CHO SE-HUI & KIM SOWOL Wednesday, May 9 at 6 p.m.
Two acclaimed translators of contemporary Korean literature, Bruce Fulton with fiction and David McCann, read here this early evening from their newest translated work. For Bruce Fulton, now the inaugural holder of the Young-Bin Min chair in Korean literature and literary translation at the University of British Columbia, after many years of living and teaching here, the new book is Cho Se-hui's book of linked stories, The Dwarf (University of Hawaii). The South Korea presented here is one that explores the dark side of 1970s industrialization, and is considered an 'iconic' one of its time. For David McCann, Korea Foundation professor of Korean Literature at Harvard, and translator of such luminaries as Kim Chi Ha, Ko Un, and Kim Nanjo, the newest work is early 20th-century poet Kim Sowol's Azaleas: A Book of Poems (Columbia University).
