ATUL GAWANDE
Thursday, May 3 at 7 p.m. at Microsoft Auditorium, Seattle Public Central Library, 1000 Fourth Avenue

Co-presented with the WASHINGTON CENTER FOR THE BOOK AT THE SEATTLE PUBLIC LIBRARY in conjunction with "Seattle Reads The Namesake." With his 2002 National Book Award-nominated book, Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science, and with numerous essays (frequently in The New England Journal of Medicine) along the way, Atul Gawande has shown himself to be one of the finest writers at work today. A 2006 MacArthur fellow, staff writer for The New Yorker, assistant professor at Harvard Medical School, and a general surgeon at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital, he is here tonight with a splendid new book, Better: A Surgeon's Notes on Performance (Metropolitan/Holt). "Better is a mesmerizing book with fascinations on every page, told with mastery, insight, compassion, and humility by a surgeon who doesn't flinch from taboo subjects or self-examination...On every page, one meets a candid and thoughtful man, who pays close attention, and who somehow manages to find the right balance between intimacy and respectfulness, in a world that can be inhospitable to both." - Diane Ackerman. "Better is a masterpiece..." – Malcolm Gladwell. Free admission is on a first-come, first-serve basis. The Seattle Public Central Library is located at 1000 Fourth Avenue (between Madison and Spring). Parking in the Central Library garage will be available for a $5 special event rate. For more information, please see www.spl.org or call (206) 386-4636.
