JHUMPA LAHIRI "Seattle Reads The Namesake"

The 2007 edition of the Washington Center for the Book at The Seattle Public Library's "Seattle Reads" program reaches its culmination with this two-day visit by award-winning author Jhumpa Lahiri for this year's novel, The Namesake (Mariner). She is scheduled to appear in three public programs at three different venues. The Town Hall event Tuesday evening is also scheduled to include an on-stage conversation with Nancy Pearl slated to do the conversing honors. Even before being read for this year's program, The Namesake has had its many readers—and is the subject of Mira Nair's acclaimed film adaptation that has just been released. "Quietly dazzling...The Namesake is that rare thing: an intimate, closely observed family portrait that effortlessly and discreetly unfolds to disclose a capacious social vision...a debut novel that is as assured and eloquent as the work of a longtime master of the craft." - The New York Times. Jhumpa Lahiri's previous book, the story collection, The Interpreter of Maladies, received the Pulitzer Prize and the PEN/Hemingway Award.
