NICOLE MONES Saturday, May 12 at 4 p.m.
The author of two very well-received novels, the Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize-winning (and some other honors) Lost in Translation and A Cup of Light, Nicole Mones pays this welcome Elliott Bay visit for her delicious new novel, The Last Chinese Chef (Houghton Mifflin). A recently widowed writer traveling to China to investigate a family secret meets a chef whose own family, involved for generations in the world of food and cooking, has some secrets of its own. A portion of The Last Chinese Chef was recently excerpted in Gourmet Magazine, a first for that venerable publication. "Sumptuous... Mones's descriptions of fine cuisine are tantalizing, and her protagonist's quest is bracing and unburdened by melodrama. Early in her visit, Maggie scoffs at the idea that 'food can heal the human heart.' Mones smartly proves her wrong." - Publishers Weekly.
