WITOLD RYBCZYNSKI Wednesday, May 2 at 7:30 p.m. Downstairs at Town Hall Seattle, 1119 Eighth Avenue
Architectural historian and www.slate.com columnist Witold Rybczynski invites readers to rethink common assumptions about development and sprawl in his new book, Last Harvest: How a Cornfield Became New Daleville: Real Estate Development in America from George Washington to the Builders of the Twenty-first Century, and Why We Live in Houses Anyway (Scribner). Mr. Rybczynski's many acclaimed books include A Clearing in the Distance, City Life, and One Good Turn: A Natural History of the Screwdriver and the Screw. "Rybczynski excels at the 'close-up,' John McPhee's method of reporting, where every interview reads like an intimate conversation, and a simple walk down neighborhood sidewalks can reveal a wealth of history...[a] charming mixture of reportage and social criticism." - Publishers Weekly. $5 tickets are available at Elliott Bay starting April 14. Town Hall Seattle is located at 1119 Eighth Avenue (entry on Seneca Street). For more information on this evening, please see www.townhallseattle.org or call (206) 652-4255.
