SHALOM AUSLANDER Thursday, October 16 at 7:30 p.m.
Shalom Auslander's Seattle appearanceas part of last year's Nextbook serieswas one of the most talked-about, controversial, and eye-opening of all last year. Excerpts of his memoir about growing up in an ultra-Orthodox community, and leaving the fold, appeared in The New Yorker and Public Radio International's This American Life, and finally in the form of Foreskin's Lament (Riverhead). This New York Times 'notable book' is now in paperback. "Writing with humor and bitter irony about the most personal subjects, with deep, real-world consequences, is no task for an acolyte, although many have tried. With his middle finger pointed at the heavens and a hand held over his heart, Auslander give us Foreskin's Lament. Mazel tov to him. And God? Well, he'll survive." – The New York Times.
