ELLIOTT BAY GLOBAL ISSUES & ETHICS BOOK GROUP Tuesday, October 14 at 6:30 p.m.
Our Global Issues & Ethics Book Group is devoted to discussing books that cover the most relevant topics of our everyday lives. We turn our attention to The Invisible Cure: Why We Are Losing the Fight Against AIDS in Africa by Helen Epstein. In what the New York Times calls "An enlightening and troubling book," Helen Epstein, a molecular biologist, writes powerfully about the AIDS epidemic in Africa. She challenges the government and aid agencies, whose mission it is to fight the epidemic, to use more effective solutions to this catastrophe. She offers common-sense solutions to this public health crisis in Africa. Commonweal said of the book, "An excellent primer on the complicated relationship between American medical science and philanthropy and the public health crisis in Africa...Reminds American readers that while good intentions are necessary, they're rarely enough."
