ELLIOTT BAY BOOK GROUP Tuesday, October 7 at 6:30 p.m.
Each month, the Elliott Bay Book Club reads and discusses the best in contemporary fiction with the occasional classic thrown in for good measure. In Thomas Mullen's The Last Town On Earth World War I rages in Europe while a small town called Commonwealth in the Pacific Northwest is quarantined during the 1918 influenza epidemic. Commonwealth in fact quarantines itself from the outside world not wanted to be infected by this "plague". The Chicago Tribune called Mullen's book, "An American variation on Albert Camus' The Plague." and London's Daily Telegraph said, "Thomas Mullen is an old-fashioned storyteller, and his epic novel dramatizes the complex tensions between individual rights and group responsibilities...Mullen is both merciless and measured in his depiction of the natural forces that can drag idealism down to earth.
