INGRID de KOK Saturday, September 30 at 7:30 p.m.
South African poet Ingrid de Kok makes a rare visit to these shores, reading here this evening as part of a U.S. visit from her Cape Town home. Seasonal Fires: New and Selected Poems (Seven Stories) is her fourth book, and first to be published in North America. Ms. de Kok, winner of the Dalro Poetry Award and the Herman Charles Bosman Award for English Literature, writes movingly about witnessing South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Hearings, the daily realities of the AIDS pandemic, her love of Bellagio, Umbria, and much more. "Read the words aloud and allow each to linger on your tongue: histogram, grace, grenade. Read them and register what the best poetry does without pretense or apology: it gives us back our lives." - Susan Rich, Cape Times.
