In conjunction with Open Circle Theater's January 14 – February 5 production of Dustin Engstrom's play The Cut, we are pleased to host this reading by Dennis Milam Bensie. His memoir, Shorn: Toys to Men (from Seattle's Coffeetown Press), is the work The Cut is adapted from, a compelling chronicle of a boyhood beset by abuse, a traumatic adolescence, and then a transformation, as an obsession with haircutting eventually helped lead to a successful career as a theatrical wig designer. "Dennis Bensie was a 'different' kind of boy, bullied at school, humiliated and virtually ignored by his father. His memoir tracks an initial fascination with hair to a full-blown, life-defining illness, a paraphilia in extremis. At times the story becomes so disturbing that you wonder how he can possibly emerge as a wonderful human being. But he does. This book is at once a confession and a gift." – Walter de Milly. "Shorn is gutsy, shocking, poignant, vibrant, painful, joyful, tear-inducing, and wickedly funny. It's a brave, ballsy, brilliantly colored memoir by a brave, ballsy, brilliantly colorful writer." – Jennifer Niven.
