MAILE MELOY

Maile Meloy has received numerous honors and distinctions for her work, her novels Lairs and Saints and A Family Daughter, and first story collection, Half in Love having established her as one of the finest fiction writers of her, or any generation. These have included being shortlisted for the Orange Prize, the Agha Khan Prize for Fiction, the PEN/Malamud Award, the Rosenthal Foundation Award, and being selected, in 2007, for Granta's Best Young American Novelists issue. She is here tonight with the paperback of last year's much-praised story collection, Both Ways is the Only Way I Want It (Riverhead), a New York Times Book Review Top 10 Books of 2009 selection. "Meloy explores loneliness in 11 stories set mostly in her native Montana ... Despite their relative brevity, these are complex stories, often showing several characters being pulled in different directions ... The author seldom allows a trickle of hope to lighten her characters' anguish, but she gives them a consciousness and dignity that make their experiences deeply moving."- Kirkus Reviews. "In the best short stories—by Poe, Raymond Carver, Hemingway, Flannery O'Connor or Alice Munro—there is always malaise, if not outright heartache, on the horizon. In less able hands this conversation turns lugubrious and contrived. But Meloy's lean, targeted descriptions and her ultimately compassionate eye make this journey hurt so good." - Los Angeles Times.
