The perfect gift—in any amount—with that personal touch of classic old world charm.
Co-presented with the ASIAN AMERICAN JOURNALISTS ASSOCIATION. New York journalist and food blogger Cheryl Lu-Lien Tan, whose writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, In Style, and the Baltimore Sun, turned her desire to know how to cook Singaporean food into an opportunity to reconnect with her family's roots. Her memoir, A Tiger in the Kitchen: A Memoir of Food and Family (Hyperion/Voice), relates the story and, fortunately for readers, includes ten recipes. "Written in the tradition of two classic but different memoirs, Maxine Hong Kingston's The Woman Warrior (1976) and Julie Powell's Julie & Julia (2005), the book is a recipe in itselfa clash of conjuring the ancient stories of one's past, a sprinkling of culinary narrative. The result is a literary treat ... A delightful take on the relationship between food, family, and tradition." – Kirkus Reviews. Cheryl will be interviewed by Terri Tazzioli of TVW. The Asian American Journalists Association will host a special fundraiser/reception with author Cheryl Lu-Lien Tan (at a Leschi residence) following the reading. Tickets ($40) include personalized cooking tips from the author and her style forecast straight from New York Fashion Week. Desserts, snacks and digestifs and a signed, special recipe included. Details, location and tickets at: www.brownpapertickets.com. Proceeds from the reception will benefit student scholarships at the nonprofit Asian American Journalists Association Seattle Chapter. This reception is open to the public. For more about the AAJA and its good work, please see www.aajaseattle.org.
