HENRI COLE & GARDNER McFALL

05/07/2010 5:30 pm
Two highly regarded poets give this joint reading as part of a special Seattle visit. Henri Cole has been a Pulitzer Prize finalist, and is the author of seven collections of poetry, including the recently released, Pierce the Skin: Selected Poems (Farrar, Straus & Giroux). "Cole is nothing if not intense on the page—his verse ... carries a kind of religious weight, as if sadness itself were a ticket out of Hell ... In Cole's poems, the stakes are always impossibly high, and every insight is deeply costly. But perhaps that's the price for being able to say, 'I can feel my heart beating inside my heart.'" - Publishers Weekly. Of Gardner McFall, more will be heard of in the program following this, as she is the author of the opera libretto, Amelia (University of Washington Press), which Seattle Opera is about to stage in a world premiere. This part of the day is devoted to poetry: Gardner McFall is the author of two collections, The Pilot's Daughter, and her newest, Russian Tortoise (Time Being Books). "Their patient gravity enlivened by sly flickers of humor, the best poems in Gardner McFall's second collection turn an attentive gaze on creatures ... whose significance feels totemic ... Many of these poems have an undertow of sorrow and loss, the more effective because of their restraint." - Rachel Hadas, The Times Literary Supplement.
