MICHELLE BATES

Holga, Diane, Blackbird, Fly ... these are all varieties of low-tech, plastic cameras using conventional, non-digital film to produce photographs for fun, and also as art. View some of these cameras in our READ window this month, and then meet Seattle photographer Michelle Bates, aka the "Holga Queen." She will be here this afternoon to celebrate the release of the second edition of her book, Plastic Cameras: Toying with Creativity (Focus). She will show a wide variety of imagery made with Holgas, Dianas, and other plastic cameras, and will talk about the techniques you can use to get amazing results from such simple tools. Bring your own camera along. Michelle Bates teaches at the Julia Dean Workshops, the International Center of Photography in New York, and at the Photographic Center Northwest. Her work is part of its present "Picture Us" exhibit, which runs through November 24.
