Seattle marine writer Elsie Hulsizer, whose earlier book Voyages to Windward explored Vancouver's west coast, now offers sailors (armchair and otherwise) a close-up of Alaska's southeast in her new book, Glaciers, Bears and Totems: Sailing in Search of the Real Southeast Alaska (Harbour Press). This account has Else Hulsizer and her husband Steve on a series of annual voyages, probing fjords, villages, glaciers, and more. Lots of animal life is here, too. Helpful is its sorting out what cruise-ship tourists see from what those who live and frequent the terrain see and know. It's expected this will be a powerpoint presentation—an informative and entertaining evening on a beautiful part of the planet to our north.
