CHASE JARVIS |
An internationally regarded photographer (probably more known outside of Seattle than in) who works in both the fine and commercial arts, Chase Jarvis is out in the larger world more than most. He brings something of that perspective—seeing the surface, looking beyond—to show how his home city Seattle works, in the sometimes subtle, often surprising, layered and threaded ways communities where culture, commerce, and collaboration are all fostered do function. In his newly-published book of photographs and short texts, Seattle 100: Portrait of a City (New Riders/Peachpit), he presents photo and word portraits of some of the people and ensembles who do this work. With its pictures and text—including little listings of places noted by the people depicted—this book is as much a starting point for conversation and exploration as it is an arrived-at object, albeit a beautifully produced one.
