IBRAHIM MUHAWI with translations of MAHMOUD DARWISH

11/27/2010 7:00 pm
Here in Seattle over the holiday weekend, editor, translator, and courtesy professor at the University of Oregon, Ibrahim Muhawi will read from and discuss his new translation of the late, great Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish's 1973 prose work, Journal of an Ordinary Grief (Yaoumiyât al-huzn al'âdî, Archipelago Books). First published when Darwish was in his early 30s, this is a searching, moving, certainly poetic account of identity and loss. Archipelago Books has published two other translations of Darwish's work, A River Dies of Thirst and Why Did You Leave the Horse Alone? Ibrahim Muhawi is known for his landmark 1989 book, Speak, Bird, Speak Again: Palestinian Arab Folktales. He has also translated Darwish's Memory for Forgetfulness, Zakaria Tamer's Breaking Knees, and is co-editor of Literature and Nation in the Middle East. "Compelling ... Such an achievement ... Offers numerous fascinating insights into the mindsets of Palestinians, Israelis, and the Israeli Arabs alike ... Muhawi's own prose and meticulous footnotes are impeccable ... An inspired and scholarly piece of research." - Andre Naffis-Sahely, Words Without Borders.
