SHAILJA PATEL

11/05/2010 7:00 pm
Poet, playwright, theatre artist, and activist Shailja Patel is here tonight as part of a tour for her U.S. debut, Migritude (Kaya Press). A third-generation Kenyan whose family originally was from India, Shailja Patel powerfully weaves themes of movement, migration, love, longing, and loss in a world that has contended, and continues to contend, with colonization, economic exploitation, and armed conflict. History is here—and the present moment. The book version of what has been a piece performed around the world is particularly beautiful and striking. "A vibrant, gendered wordsmith's voice, speaking Africa, Asia, the metropole, history, the present—the world. Shailja Patel is that rare thing—an activist poet in prose and verse." - Gayatri Spivak. "Illuminates with compelling artistry and eloquence the shameful secrets of Empire's history." - Howard Zinn. Presently based in Nairobi and Berkeley, Shailja Patel has had her work translated into twelve languages, and has received a Sundance Theatre Fellowship, an African Guest Writer Fellowship from the Nordic Africa Institute, the Voices of Our Nations Poetry Award, a Lambda Slam Championship, and the Outwrite Poetry Prize, among other honors and distinctions. This should be a night to behold.
