STEVEN BRILL at Seattle Public Central Library

11/01/2011 7:00 pm

Presented by the LEAGUE OF EDUCATION VOTERS, in partnership with DEMOCRATS FOR EDUCATION REFORM, EXCELLENT SCHOOLS NOW, and STAND FOR CHILDREN. Steven Brill's new book, Class Warfare: Inside the Fight to Fix America's Schools (Simon & Schuster) is a compelling, sure-to-be controversial narrative of the push for reform that has accelerated rapidly in town halls, state capitals, and on Capitol Hill in recent years, following President Obama's Race to the Top contest. He tackles hotly debated questions—how to measure teacher competency, set salaries, the role of teachers' unions, the struggle within the Democratic Party between reformers and old-school union loyalists, and policies like "last in, first out" that require teacher layoffs based on seniority rather than performance. A panel of local educational associates will join Steven Brill for this discussion, which will be broadcast live. Free admission. Seattle Public Central Library is at 1000 Fourth Avenue (between Madison & Spring). For more about the broadcast/chat and information (including advance reservations), please see www.educationvoters.org.
