OUTSIDER'S INN COLLECTIVE presents BRUTOPIA

10/25/2009 2:00 pm
Co-presented with Outsider's Inn Collective. On and around the 21st of October, 2009, more than 50 theatre companies around the world join together in an international festival to celebrate the 21st anniversary of Howard Barker's theatre company The Wrestling School. 21 for 21 is a remarkable event of staged readings, full performances, and devised works that rejoice in Barker's playwrighting, directing, poetry, and painting in locations from Mexico to Iceland, in five languages, by organizations such as the Royal Shakespeare Company, RADA, Perth's Skylight Theatre Company, and here at Elliott Bay. In their production of Barker's Brutopia, directed by Elliott Bay's Greg Berry the Outsiders Inn Collective presents an imagined history of Sir Thomas More and his "unloved" daughter Cecilia. More invented the perfect society—Utopia. Cecilia in her turn became his antagonist by writing a secret counter-text, an invented dystopian Brutopia—which bears a striking resemblance to Tudor England in all its cruelty and brutality.
