Ann Streissguth and Daniel Streissguth are most known as two esteemed University of Washington faculty emeritae. Ann Streissguth taught at the UW School of Medicine and was a national pioneer in research on fetal alcohol issues, and Daniel Streissguth was a professor at the UW College of Architecture and Urban Planning. At their Capitol Hill home, they took on the decades-long work of making a beautiful garden out of land that was mostly given over to Himalayan blackberries, horsetails, and morning glories. In their lovely book, In Love with a Hillside Garden (University of Washington), co-authored with their landscape architect son Benjamin Streissguth, they show and tell a particular story of one garden made, and also illustrate the potential for other such efforts to bear fruit elsewhere. Now a part of the Seattle park system—as a result of a 1996 gift to the City—this public garden is a pleasure to behold in book form—and in the real experience of visiting it.
