ARLENE KIM & ANNE M. DOE OVERSTREET with BRYAN RUST

09/16/2011 7:00 pm

This evening, two fine Seattle poets read together in celebration of their respective, and both very well-received debut collections. First generation Korean American poet Arlene Kim's What Have You Done to Our Ears to Make Us Hear Echoes? (Milkweed Editions) was written as an exploration of what she calls the hybrid histories of immigrant diasporas. "Using fairy tale archetypes like axes and keys, and diverse cultural references—from the Romanovs and code ciphers to Korean birth rituals—Kim recasts the experience of family immigration in language that manages to be both lush and restrained. This is a book to savor, give your friends, and let echo in your ears for a long time to come." – Katrina Vandenberg. Arlene Kim received the 2007 Academy of American Poets James Wright Prize, and a 2007 Marcella DeBourg Fellowship, among other honors. Joining Arlene Kim here tonight is Anne M. Doe Overstreet, who will read from her first book, Delicate Machinery Suspended: Poems (T.S. Poetry Press). "These poems shimmer with gossamer lightness but also possess the strength and sinews of hard-won wisdom and what Henry James called felt life." – Gregory Wolfe. Anne M. Doe Overstreet is a Soapstone Resident, and a two-time Pushcart Prize nominee. The evening's program will include a performance by acoustic guitarist Bryan Rust.
