Two esteemed translators read together tonight from recent translations of esteemed Spanish poet Rafael Alberti, occasioned by publication of Carolyn Tipton's newly published Returnings: Poems of Love and Distance (White Pine Press). She visits from Berkeley, where she teaches at the University of California.

“In the reinvention of yesterday through color, scent, and song, Alberti’s revisitations pulsate with the nostalgia of love—of youth, of spouse, of homeland. Indeed, his years of exile seem to have deepened the hues of his bucolic and maritime imagery, allowing him to fashion a vibrant present of former times. Carolyn Tipton´s moving translation recreates Alberti’s powerful imaginings and musicality through an even cadence and chiming assonance, luring us into its rhythmic magic.“— Lisa Rose Bradford.

This volume has received the Cliff Becker Translation Prize. University of Washington professor Anthony Geist, who has been a wonderful part of numerous Elliott Bay evenings in various capacities, including his  recent translation of Peruvian poet Luis Hernández’s work, The School of Solitude (Swan Isle Press), will read from his own translations of Alberti (not yet published here), from Alberti's book, Roma, peligro para caminantes. This should be a splendid, enlivening evening.
