Edward Hirsch with Garrett Hongo

Two revered poets, each of whom has read at Elliott Bay back in the times of in-person readings, Edward Hirsch and Garrett Hongo, give this joint virtual reading to help celebrate the release of the new poetry anthology, 100 Poems to Break Your Heart (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt). Edited by Edward Hirsch, who in addition to ten award-winning books of poems (most recently, Stranger By Night) and numerous books of prose, including books about reading poetry, this wide-ranging anthology gives readers a trove of poems from around the world that quicken, enlighten, inspire in enduring ways. The poems are accompanied by insightful commentary.  Long a highly regarded teacher, as well, Edward Hirsch is presently president of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Speaking of highly regarded teacher - and poet - Garrett Hongo has long been a stellar presence at the University of Oregon in Eugene, mentor to numerous poets and prose writers. His poetry collections include The River of Heaven and Corral Road, and he has written a singular memoir of his home place, Volcano: A Memoir of Hawai’i.
